Diane K24: "Fear is not in the habit of speaking truth," was said by Tacitus in his "Histories" about the tyrannical Emperor, Domitian, who, for example, put some Stoic Senators to death.

To read Tacitus -- his Annals and his Histories -- is a moving and sobering experience, since his work begins with the death of Augustus Caesar (Annals), when memory of freedom in the felled Roman Republic was still fresh, until the time of the Four Emperors and Domitian (The Histories), where after the death of Domitian there was a return to more tolerance of free speech. It was in the context of having lived through the trauma of Nero through Domitian that Tacitus -- who was a Roman Senator -- spoke.
