I’m late to read this Diane - I’m SO VERY SORRY….. I know that empty feeling. It doesn’t go away quickly. Sharing our hearts with our animals is perfection. Losing them is anti-perfect. Hugs and understanding 💐💕

Thanks, Pamela. Our house feels empty. We have a stuffed dog that looks like Paddy, and it stays in the bedroom at night and comes to the living room in the day. Silly but you know.

BTWI had a pet portrait done and the artist truly captured HIM - So Bowie watches over us from the fireplace mantelpiece ❤️

Yes I do - it is been almost 2 years. I said no more - Matt say PLEASE - then a rehoming situation happened and now we have Wynstan a Heeler/Great Dane mix - my resolve is pitifully broken… but I love him 😍

Beautiful photos. I am so sorry for your loss.

Too old? Too old to deal with puppy bullshit? Most breeds are 2-3 years old before they turn into responsible citizens. Take classes and socialize the heck out of them snd don’t fall into the trap of not telling them to knock it off when they behave badly and you’ll be okay.

Or too old as in you might go before they do? None of us know when our time is. Any responsible owner should have a plan in place for their animals, whether that is a friend or a relative or a rescue of some sort. My daughter teaches a class for therapy dogs and their handlers, mostly retired women. A few years ago one of the ladies died. My daughter took her three dogs (little lap dogs that between them barely made up one dog) and two rabbits. She still has the rabbits, but the owner had made arrangements with Best Friends for lifetime care for the dogs.

If you are of an age where it might be a concern, a responsible breeder might ask what your plans are if you can no longer care for the dog. They aren’t being snoopy or rude, just concerned for the puppy or dog they are placing. Most responsible breeders have a contract that requires

Susan, thanks for the good information about Good Friends. We will definitely have a plan in writing even if it’s a family member. 💕

Sorry pressed the wrong thing.

That requires the dog come back to them in those circumstances unless you have previously made arrangements with them.

I had made the determination when I hit my 60s that I had one more puppy in me. After that I was planning on rehomed dogs from a breeder. (I have not had a lot of luck working with rescues over the years.) So far that is working out. I had Harvey, who I mentioned before, and now Hildy, a rough collie who didn’t pass all of her genetic testing.

It fun to get a puppy and raise it and have it bonded to you from the beginning, but a rehomed dog will bond with you, perhaps even more strongly than a puppy. That’s my experience anyway.

Good luck in your search.

I agree wholeheartedly. My little man(oversized beagle) was the best pal anyone could have. He was part of a dump of lab dogs, that ran together through a very rural area. A friend was able to grab 3 of them. One (Reeses)was later honored with the most rides in a police car for running loose. His brother (Peanutbutter)was not involved because he was the senior citizen. No. Two(Jiffy)was a howler for leaves floating by the window and mine no. Three(Skippy)the most devoted, quietest but sat on you thinking he was a lapdog even if he just met you if I was ok, he was ok! Unfortunately his time as a lab tester caught up with him and it became our honor to help him rest in painless peace. I’ll miss Skippy until I die.

I know I got lucky with all my pets because I had the time to showed everyone of them with love and certainty that this was their forever home. Good luck in whatever breed. Love is easy!

We were thinking of a beagle adoption a couple of years ago as a companion for Paddy. Now wish we had so we could have a fur boy!

Paddy is always in your heart. I terribly miss my boys and cats that I was blessed to share my life with. I really want another, but at 82 that’s not an option. I couldn’t leave one behind, ever. My two kitties are spoken for thankfully, by my kids , so I’m the old lady that pets every available dog ! You will be blessed for all the animals that you have nurtured and loved. I hope that we will be surrounded on the Rainbow Bridge. 🫶🫶🫶

I am so sorry for your loss. I had a collie/Shepard mix when I was young and she could make her body do a 180 every time she wagged her tail. I still think of her sometimes and she makes me smile. The sheer love she gave was such a comfort on bad days.

I hope you find the perfect baby sister or brother for the beautiful creature you lost. And I hope it's soon so you can snuggle and hug while the returns come in.

Such warm memories you’ll have with these photographs. He was well loved and sorely missed. As others have said that if you go to a shelter, when you see the perfect dog, you’ll know. You’ll also know when the time is right. My heart goes out to you as I know it’s hard missing him.
